Re: If you were go back in time to 1st Year of Crossfit...

Overhead squats, dead-hang pullups, ring dips, and handstands.

Re: HG Rogue vs Competition Bumpers

Yeah, I've heard all the counter-arguments and they all revolve around the notion that "oh, it's not so bad." But no one argues that working with 45 lb. plates and 45 lb. bars is easier.

Math is...

Re: HG Rogue vs Competition Bumpers

Gyms that use kilo plates - even here in the U.S. of A. - have fewer misloads and their lifters spend less time scratching their heads trying to figure out how much weight is on the bar. I have seen...

Re: C+J PR! Critique Please

You're clearly limited by the jerk. Dip went forward, sending the bar forward. Put a bend in that back leg in the landing position; land on the ball of the foot and don't let the foot point out.

Re: 500m row

I've heard a lot of different strategies for those first few strokes. Here's what my start is like:

My first two strokes are 1/4 strokes, similar to squatting high. I only use my arms to pull myself...

Re: How old to attend level 1?

A certificate of attendance should be good for all eternity. Someone either attended the cert or they didn't.

Re: 500m row

If your butt's getting sore after just 6 minutes you mostly just need to row more, a little faster each time or a little longer or both.

Re: 500m row

It's what all serious on-water rowers do in the winter when the water is frozen over. It's more popular than you'd think and it is VERY competitive. We're talking current and former Olympians and Div...

Re: Hang Snatch

Bending your arms early in a hang snatch means you don't have the concept correct in your head. The bar is supposed to hang from your shoulders. It's a hip movement, not an arm exercise. Get the hips...

Re: 500m row

These were indoor rowing competitions? Or Crossfit competitions? In indoor rowing competitions you're not allowed to change the damper during the race.

A damper setting of "5" on one rower may have...

Re: Deadlift & Squat Clean Check

On the clean that's a really bad early arm bend. It's more like a high-pull/reverse curl into a front squat.

Re: 500m row

Absolutely not. In fact setting the damper to "10" is usually a bad, bad idea, especially for beginners who haven't learned proper mechanics yet.

Do a search on "damper settings".

Re: 500m row

That's hard to say. It all depends on your age, weight, height, and current level of [non-rowing] fitness. An outstanding performance for a 40-year-old, out-of-shape ex-gymnast would be a very...

Re: Power Clean Critique

Feet are too wide at the start, no hook grip, early arm bend, bar gets away from the body during the pull, elbows are slow to get around and they don't finish high enough.

Re: Front Rack Problems with Clients

I'm not going to say that stretching the wrists is a bad thing ... I'm not going to say that KStar's wrist stretch is a bad wrist stretch ... but it is largely an unproductive use of time and energy....

Re: Regripping for Jerk

The bar needs to land on meat, not bone. Check your receiving position; if the bar doesn't have full contact all the way across the shoulders you're doing it wrong. No gaps!

Re: Front Rack Problems with Clients

Can they do a no-hands front squat?

Are they protracting the shoulders or retracting them? If they are taught to retract the shoulders they absolutely will not be able to rack the bar properly. The...

Re: Help w/ Snatch and OHS

You get more ankle flexion in your OHS than I do. So I'd suggest that it's the hips that are actually the limiting factor and the ankles are merely trying to make up the difference.

I bought Eleikos. That was over a dozen years ago, still have 'em, still use 'em.

Re: Zurich Olympic Barbells

I consider any of the IWF certified bars - Eleiko, DHS, Uesaka, Werksan, Zhangkong - to be "quality" bars. Everything else will be a bit of a compromise.

Re: Questions on Bumper Plates

It's cheaper to buy a lighter barbell than it is to buy a sturdy but light bumper plate. So my advice is similar to the above: A 30 lb. barbell and 35 lb. bumpers will last a heck of a lot longer...

Re: Trap Bar DeadLift Form

The most important thing I notice is that you lose the curve in your lumbar spine right at the setup.

Do this: stand tall. Put one hand in the middle of your low back. Feel that curve? Keep that...

Re: Stupidity

Dan John has been advocating this type of workout for a long time. The 100-rep death set of something nasty, your choice. Even he admits it may not be such a good idea for physical fitness. It's more...

Re: Stupidity

This brings up the age old question of dosage. How much is therapeutic (i.e. a positive contribution towards fitness) and how much is overdose? The answer is not easy. Certainly this sort of WOD is...
