snatch balance

do you need to go all the way into a deep squat when doing a snatch balance. I was doing them heavy today, and wasnt getting as deep as I would for a squat clean...it almost felt like it was a jerk ( with the bar starting behind). As long as you get under it with locked arms, is this okay??
sorry I dont have video of it! thanks so much

Re: snatch balance

It's for training how to get under the bar, so yeah you should go deep.

Re: snatch balance

Yes the point is that you drop into a full Over Head Squat, which means you need to get all the way down. I think you are supposed to catch it as close to to the bottom as you can and if you cannot not catch it in the bottom position you are supposed to ride it down to the bottom position? At least thats what I thought, though I don't train snatches much...

Re: snatch balance

You want to just "pop" the bar off your shoulders and catch it in the bottom position, not ride it all the way down. If you notice many of the Chinese lifters, they do the same thing when they are squat jerking. It's a bounce off their chest into the bottom of a squat. Same thing when you do snatch balances. Pop it off the back rack and catch it at arms length in a squat.

Snatch balances are great for building that confidence of dropping under heavier weights, making snatching a whole lot more fun and easier [mentally].

Re: snatch balance

Hmmm. Maybe this exercise will be good for me then, because I think my mind is holding me up on the snatch, more than my body. 135 is always off and on for me. If I get freaked out, I miss the weight.
