Snatch Balance

Todays WOD is 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 of Snatch Balance.

Allison of NYC put up a video of herself doing the WOD on the main site.

2 newbie questions

1) Why does she come so far out from the racks with it? Wouldn't she spend less of her energy doing it closer and perhaps then be able to lift more?

2) Shouldn't she use a snatch grip? In my inexperience, that looks more like a press grip than a snatch grip.

Re: Snatch Balance

She walks so far out from the racks so that she can safely bail. Note her last two failed reps. That's why.

She does use a narrow grip, but she's also a tiny person, so her normal snatch grip isn't nearly as wide as mine is. And, she's flexible enough to get away with the narrow grip. One advantage to being more narrow is that it places less stress on your wrists.

Re: Snatch Balance

I wondered about the narrow grip too. Thanks Tamara.

I looked at another one of her videos and she does not snatch that narrow. So why do snatch balances that narrow? They looked more like squat jerks.

Walking out with the weight of a snatch balance really doesn't expend much energy at all...
Maybe with 90-100% of your max back squat I can understand it feeling heavy just walking, but anything lighter than that, no way.

Oh, I agree. I know she doesn't snatch that narrow. I was just pointing out that she can get away with it. When I do snatch balances or OHS or behind the neck jerks, I always go slightly more narrow than my snatch grip because it significantly reduces wrist pain. I don't know Allison't logic, and she is way narrow compared to what I do. I can ask her.

ETA: Allison said she just recently changed her grip on the actual snatch to make it wider. She used to snatch with a narrow grip because it felt more comfortable. So, the snatch balance grip in the video is how she's always done it.
