Starting Strength Gym Comments

So I have been doing ss for about 3 weeks now. I was happy with my strength but I wanted to gain some weight, so i figured id give it a shot.

Im 21, 5'7", and started at 160lbs. Im up to 164 right now.

Anyways, today I was doing my 3x5 squats, which is currently 285 (5lbs increase each workout) As I finished my last set a guy that looked all puffed up from creatine and his 200 bicep curls walked by a gave me this weird look.
I turned to him with a look on my face like, what? He said to me, "dude, thats a sh** load of weight, and you took those squats really deep."

I chuckled and said thanks. It felt good to have a guy many people would consider "buff and strong" look at my squats and be dumbfounded!!!

Stop the press. A globo gym compliment!?

I'm surprised he didn't tell you to stop at about 1/4 squat.

285 lbs in a 3x5, you're 164 lbs and you're been doing this for only 3 weeks? That's just 15% shy of you hitting a 2x Bodyweight squat.

Me thinks you've been lifting before you did Starting Strength.

When I was reading the first post, I was totally expecting the same thing. Or telling you to look up or something.

Nice

That's solid my friend. I hope that you didn't start too high and are staring down an early stall. I had a pretty good idea of my 5-rep maxes when i starting my 2nd and current cycle of Starting Strength and aimed to hit those marks about 5 weeks in. At any rate, well done. It's always nice to get a little respect around the weight room.

Re: Starting Strength Gym Comments

Well I have been doin crossit for 6 months prior. I know I am strong for my size. I was happy with my maxes but I want a bigger frame. I also am blessed to have the genetics to build muscle easily and quickly. Along with a proper diet that is.

I am a police officer and the "intimidation factor" is much needed for me. Especially being 5'7".

I'm hoping I can get my 5rep max squat up to 315. Which I think I can. Also I want my 1rep max bench to be 315. Before I started SS it was 280. What's do you guys think? Is it doable?

Hell yes, man! The bench might take some more specialized work and could take a while, perhaps switching to texas method not too far in the distant future, but the squats are totally doable. How much are you eating? If you're serious about a bigger stronger frame that 4 added lbs should probably be 1 or 2 weeks worth of weight. You doing GOMAD or other source of large caloric excess?
