Since, Rick's program was inspired by Westside, it's interesting that you use slow eccentrics since Louie is pretty pro explosive, fast movements.
You misread that one, Robert, I said "Some of all of that gets mixed in these days besides slow eccentrics."

I know some people really like eccentrics and tempo lifting, but I've never heard a convincing argument for them.

Huge thanks to Coach Scarpulla for yet another inspiring seminar at CrossFit Durham! We all learned a lot, moved big weight, put up huge PRs, and went places mentally where we've never gone before. This was my third seminar with Coach Scarpulla, and I keep learning more every second I spend with him. The weights keep moving up, the level of what I expect of myself keeps getting raised, and the mental focus and intensity continues to get dialed in. I am honored to call him Coach.

Well put, Tripp!

I met Tripp last year at an Ultimate Advantage Seminar and saw him again this weekend when I made it up to CrossFit Durham this past week for Day 2 of Rick's Seminar. It was fantastic! As usual, the intensity Coach Scarpulla brings is amazing! And even having been to the seminar before I still saw and learned new stuff. Everyone walked out of there pumped up to get stronger and better!

Rick's now helping me prepare for my first strongman competition at the end of this month. I think it will go really well! The variety used in my UA program has made the transition to strongman movements very easy.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Did my first strongman competition! Once again proved the versatility of the template as I worked strongman movements into my assistance. For example, some days I put stone practice as #3 on a lower day, or zercher carries as #4 or 5 to get ready for the Conan's wheel. As I got close ME lower day turned into mostly strongman movements. I also added a lot of 1 arm DB shoulder press and push press to get ready for the circus dumbbell (only one person out of the 23 light and heavy weight novices got more reps on the circus DB than me).

I had no problems with the implements and came in a strong 4th out of 13 lightweight novices (neck and neck with #3 guy). I also beat 5 out of 10 of the heavyweight novices who used the same weights as we did. I put a few of my events on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BcLGAr67hw (WFS except perhaps for yelling and music)

Thanks again to Rick for his help gearing up for it!

I like loud music and loud encouragement from lifting partners, but don't have that often these days so have to rely on my inner drive (and caffeine sometimes, haha).

One thing to keep in mind is that mental focus is something you can get better at like anything else with practice. You've got to practice ditching all the BS from your day and focusing. Don't be thinking about your girlfriend, your job, school, or whatever. Focus on that next rep. That next set. Maybe you need to get mad. Maybe you need to give yourself little pep talks: "Are you gonna let that weight beat you? Are you gonna do some pansy *** few reps and then quit? HELL NO!" Learn what you gotta do the do what you gotta do.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

We are having Rick do a seminar at our place at Baldwin Wallace University, Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday of July 26th and July 27th. The Seminar will take place in the newly renovated Packard Center - former headquarters for the Cleveland Browns. I have been using Rick's techniques for over 3 years now at two different NCAA football programs successfully. Have seen tremendous results, but most importantly, our players believe in it and enjoy it. This clinic, like most of his, will be performance related. There will be both crossfitters, High school and college coaches, and athletes in attendance.
Email me for details if you are interested.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Promera Sports was up at Ultimate Advantage a couple months ago and shot a nice video with Rick. He talks about a serious accident that sparked his desire to get strong again, his family, how he got motivated to start Ultimate Advantage, and the culture of UA - including the only two rules at the gym. Enjoy! (Mostly WFS - one curse at the very, very end.)
