Re: confusing..

Well CrossFit is a program.

SS is another program, it is linear progression strength training for novice trainees made by Mark Rippetoe.

Metcon is short for metabolic conditioning.

Sealfit is an iteration of CrossFit style programming.

CrossFit Brand X is an affiliate who posts very helpful "Rx'd Scaling" of the main site WOD.

Re: confusing..

Think of the Crossfit program more like a template or methodology that aims to give you broad, overall fitness. Other affiliates (gyms) all over the world (including brand x, sealfit and 2 thousand others) utilise this template / methodology in their own workouts to suit their own client base. Crossfit style workouts are mostly metcons (metabolic conditioning) which train your body to excel over various durations.

SS is a different program (which contains 0 metcons) aimed predominantly at ramping your strength up. There are a couple of others you'll see mentioned around these forums (such as 70s big, crossfit strenth bias, crossfit football) which are more or less hybrid programs.

Does this help?

Depending on where you're currently at, where you want to be and what you enjoy is what determines what program is best for you.

Re: confusing..

Where is the confusion coming from? Have you searched and read up on each program? For instance if you Google "Starting Strength" the first thing that comes up is a link to the SS wiki, then links to SS.com and the SS book. You can read about the programs from the people who wrote them, not from the interpretations of people on this board. As a side note, even if you're not planning on doing SS, you should get SS the book for its instruction on the lifts.

The difference between the programs is what sets of goals they are best suited for. SS might be perfect for one person but an awful choice for someone who needs something more like Sealfit.

Re: confusing..

No, not at all. If you're doing SS you're just doing SS, you dont go for a weekend jog or nothing. It has a high recovery requirement.

If you want to mix strength with crossfit look up one of the hybrid type programs (70s big, crossfit strength bias, crossfit football).

More importantly, what are your goals? If you shared where you're currently at and where you wish to go some experienced people could put you on the right path.

No.

But, that's why the hybrid programs exist.

The 70's Big program is the old CrossFit Wichita Falls program (which has been tweaked for version 2.0). You are essentially following the SS model but only squatting twice a week. That allows you to add some conditioning without killing your recovery.

The Greyskull LP program is similar but with some sets to failure.

CFFB has the strength programming and WODs already done for you.

5/3/1 lends itself to added conditioning.

Lots of strength programming can be run with WODs. The important thing is to CHOOSE SOMETHING and then GO instead of doing what many people do, which is to spend an endless amount of time debating programs on the internet instead of just lifting the barbell and getting stronger.

Re: confusing..

^^^ This.

Decide what really matters to you, and set your goals. Once you have your desired outcomes, then you can search for what you really want.

The easiest goals to work back from are specific, performance based goals. Having a squat of xxx kg, running a mile time in xx:xx, being able to perform an iron cross, etc. are pretty specific, and easily measured and programmed for. 'I want to have abs' is much harder.

Once you've got your goals, do a google search, and ask questions on the various forums. The more you ask, the better you will be prepared with knowledge and understanding.

Re: confusing..

I've always considered CrossFit more of a philosophy than a specific program.
