found out something interesting/disturbing this morning

my buddy who plays college ball was home for the weekend and we hit the gym this morning. i told him about crossfit and took him through todays wod with me. he got the main idea i think but he didnt seem to care. after the wod i asked him, what kind of lifts do his trainers have him do.

well, turns out he does all the power lifts religiously, and runs every so often. oh yeah, and he's taking steroids

he showed me where he injects them and all that... i told him that's not really being fit but he said he doesnt want to be fit. he just wants to throw the ball harder.. anyway, thought i should share

Unless you are OK with your friend being identified by someone reading your post, I'd recommend editing it.

Hopefully someone will talk some sense into your friend.

Thank you, team sarcasm!

OP, go watch Dave Tate's video in the journal about his thoughts on athletes taking steroids with an open mind. Then come back to this thread and report your findings.

Now there's an educated, open-minded way of looking at it.

Re: found out something interesting/disturbing this morning

It's institutionalized at the College level, whether anyone wants to talk about it or not.

Someone I know very well played at a med size Div 1a school. His Freshman year, a team captain came and put his arm around hime after practice one day. He said "Coach asked me to talk to you. He's worried that you aren't big enough and you might get hurt."

He was given a number to call, and some very clear instructions on what to do.

This was 20 years ago, I can only imagine that it's even more blatant now, especially at a big money Div 1 school.

Seriously. How many guys come in to programs and put on 40-50 lbs by their sophmore year? LOTS.

But to echo the above: What, your buddy the college football player is juicing? OMG, that is sooo shocking. :-)

Re: found out something interesting/disturbing this morning

The sarcasm is a little much. I played football in college. There were exactly 4 guys - on a roster of 50 or so - using juice. And it never actually helped them: what they all actually needed was to grow at least 4" taller.

But to equate college ball with steroids is pretty offensive to the other 46 of us on every team who are clean and always have been.

I'm sure some programs have higher percentages, some maybe much higher. But you can't assume the weight gain = guilty... we were told to eat one full plate of fries with cottage cheese for every plate of other food we got in the dining halls. That works plenty well, believe me. I got to school at 196 as a freshman and was 235 by the next year.

All that said - Aaron the best thing you can do is outlift your friend, or introduce him to clean lifters who do. Once he sees the risks are unnecessary (has he heard of GOMAD?) its going to be an easier decision to get himself off the crap.

Re: found out something interesting/disturbing this morning

I meant it good naturedly, sorry if it didn't come off that way.

I'm sure programs do vary.. I have a data point of one, so it is probably incorrect to make sweeping generalizations. But, at the school this person played at, it was very widespread.
