Should you add ab routines?

Good evening!

Today was my 3rd day of CF training. I've been keeping my core tight when I complete an exercise, but haven't felt as if I've been working my abs.

My question is, do you add an ab workout to the WOD or are they hit overtime? The reason I ask is, one of my goals is to slim down my mid section as well as strengthen it.

Thanks for your help,

Tony

You absolutely cannot 'slim down' an area by focusing on it. You can strengthen it. But the fat will stay there.

Spot reduction is a myth...and my guess is that if you do CF for a month you will look back on this post as somewhat humorous.

Re: Should you add ab routines?

1. Spot reduction doesn't work. If you want to slim down your midsection, you need to lose body fat overall. To do that, fix your diet.

2. If you think Crossfit doesn't have ab work, just wait. I'm sure something like Barbara or Michael will be along real soon. (See FAQ for explanations of these and other fun workouts.)

3. Pretty much any CF workout will require good midline stabilization, which is what your core muscles are actually *supposed* to do. You'll discover how effectively they handle that job (or not) the first time you try to max out your deadlift.

Re: Should you add ab routines?

I did 5 rep max front squats today after warming up with the clean & jerk. I felt a complete, utterly maximal abdominal contraction during each of those reps. That is what core strength is all about. Maybe try the Tabata protocol for various exercises. Other than that, search Zone, paleo, and intermittent fasting on these forums.

You mean more ab work than the 30 -45 ghd situps you do in the warm up plus the WOD?

Re: Should you add ab routines?

I find drilling a lot of gymnastics skills helpful for core strength. L-sits help. Knees-to-elbows help. Kettle bell swings definitely help. Overhead squats help. Sumo dead lift high pull helps also.

Re: Should you add ab routines?

i think kind of depends on what program you want to adhere to.

if you want to be 100% main page crossfit then you probably don't need the extra work. if you are doing a hybrid strength & crossfit program you might want to add them in.

i am currently on a strength cycle were i lift 3 days a week. i also do 2-3 crossfit wods a week. so i choose to do core work on my strength days. 3 sets of unassisted sit ups and back extensions (if i am not deadlifting that day).

Thanks. I was a little crabby this morning and that helped.
