My Son Made Me Do This!!

He's a good kid and has been bugging me to get started on this for quite some time. He's been very successful with it the CF and SS programs. If you look, I bet you can find him on this forum. I know he'll be checking up on me here, which is ok since I've been watching him.

...and yes, I know to be successful, this has to be for me!

So, here's the info on me. 43/m 5'10"/200# All the typical middle age problems, high cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. Was a high school athlete in all sports. Liked wrestling most of all. Got "back in shape" once in my late twenties and then again in my late thirties. Those obviously didn't last.

Will be seeing the Dr. tomorrow for the recommended pre-workout physical. Not suspecting any problems. Had the blood work done last week. Cholesterol of 227 and Triglycerides of 265. (ouch) Also going to talk about what it takes to get off the blood pressure medication.

So I guess that gets me to some goals.
1) Get off the pills. (Ok, I'll take the fish oil, vitamins, etc.)
2) Train for a marathon in late June.
3) Be able to do a muscle up!

Those ought to be enough to get me started and we'll set some more goals as we go along.

Looking forward to getting some feedback from you folks to point me in the right direction and keep me motiviated.

Re: My Son Made Me Do This!!

Hey Dad!

Glad to see you on here after so much gentle persuasion...

Let me know what the doctor says about getting off the medication. My bets are he'll give you the AHA recommendation of a high carb, low fat diet. This thread would be a good read:

http://www.board.crossfit.com/showth...ghlight=Doctor WFS

I'll be getting my blood drawn tomorrow, so I should have my own numbers soon.

Could you post the To Finish Template you're using to get an idea of the structure?

What about running shoes? It just occured to me that with lots of miles to go, you might want some cushy new shoes to pad the way.

Welcome to the boards!

If you are worried about your cholesterol, you should read "Good Calories, Bad Calories".

Welcome.

Cholesterol might not be his problem but look at his Triglycerides! Robert, "ouch" is right!

Robert, it's great that you're taking steps to improve your health. This might just be a case of symantics (sp?), but, do not fall into the trap of thinking that all of your symptoms are typical for middle aged folks. They are common, yes, but they are not natural or typical of what happens to you as you hit middle age. They are man-made, and you are now on the path to un-make them!!

Re: My Son Made Me Do This!!

Justin- thanks for the tip on the book. I'll have to check it out. Love your log too. I like your definition of Monster. After all, it isn't what you show, its what you can do!

Nancy- Your right. It's a problem to think my current condition is "typical". That somehow makes it alright, which it isn't!

So, results of todays Dr Appt:

Dr was happy to see me wanting to get off the meds. (Really!) I was on these to help prevent migraines. They have worked pretty well. Went from having two/week to one in three months. Have made some other changes (including job) which have also helped. But CF still has to be the better way.

Anyway, was on beta blockers, so can't just stop them cold turkey. Cutting dose in half starting tonight, and then should be done with them all by Jan 7th! Will be tracking BP and migraine triggers very carefully!

So Today . . Fran. . . she's an evil lady today!

Three rounds 21-15-9
65# thrusters
pullups

Time 4:00

Ok, used a lighter weight and had to "jump"on all but two pullups. Form got kinda lousy on the last set of thrusters.

Found the last time I did Fran - March 28th, 2008. Time of 5:12. Funny that I had used 65# back then too! An improvement of 1:12. Not as bad as I had thought.

Awesome work. And your son seems like a great guy. You must be proud. All the best to both of you.

Re: My Son Made Me Do This!!

Nice work dad! Improvements always provide motivation to keep improving. Did you do this at home or at the gym? Did you describe CF to the Doc or just tell him you're going to exercise? How often are you going to measure your BP? Once/week? It would be nice to get those posted so the improvement is written down. Hopefully being fitter will help your headaches too!

Re: My Son Made Me Do This!!

Chris- Thanks. I've been blessed to have three really great kids. Ryan is my oldest and he's always made me proud... concerned sometimes, but proud.

Vanessa - Thank you too. I guess I'm going to have to get used to being a bit sore every day. Reminds me I'm alive.

Ok, did Fran at the gym yesterday. But with the temp dropping to zero, and work to do around the house, I elected to to today's at home.

Warm-up with a little Gerbil Training, (treadmill) a light jog for about a half mile. Then 3x10 of pushups and situps followed by some stretching. Have to focus more on stretching, I'm about as limber as a 2x4.

Used a 35# plate instead of the dumbell. Probably doesn't achieve the "awkward" balance improving effect, but worked for me.

Got all five rounds in with a time of 5:03.

I usually do my BP a couple times/wk. Not tonight, getting late for me.

Gotta remember to leave the faucet drip tonight. Don't want it to freeze!

Tomorrow looks like it's going to be a lot of fun!!

Re: My Son Made Me Do This!!

Ya I know what you mean about it getting cold...I'm routinely wearing a sweatshirt now! Another workout conveniently done at home it looks like...

...which means you could probably rope Jon into a few rounds
