Carter's Aussie Experiment - it hurts so much...

I'm on the boards a lot, so what the heck, start a workout log...

let's see... starting points...

totally deconditioned after a month in hospital due to blood clots in liver and bowel.

how deconditioned? - i couldn't walk up and down my street without feeling dizzy, out of breath...

got some "cardio" through loads of cycling after doctor's ok for "light" exercise.... wasn't enough for crossfit!!!

started crossfitting in sep 08 after doctor's ok to exercise. limitations in exercise were basically avoid anything that might bruise. check for cuts and monitor bruises.

starting weight 120+ kg... i stopped weighing myself after i hit 120kg...

no experience in powerlifts or olympic lifts.... weight training at gym limited to selectorized machines...

Fran - 12:15 with gravitron for pullups (oct 08 - haven't attempted since.. should try soon)
pullups - zero, that's right zero..
deadlift - zero, never deadlifted in my life (turned out to be a good thing)
overhead press - zero, never done it in my life
squat - zero.... partial squats don't count...
bench - zero.... never tried
max pushups - 35
situps in one minute - 50

where am I now....
weight - 110kg
pullups - 6 pullups strict deadhang, kip (or floppy fish) 2 in a row...
deadlift - 140kg 3 rm
overhead press - 75kg 1 rm
front squat - 90kg 5 rm

WODs..
26/1/09 - Australia Day!!!
Barbara - with thin powerband
2:45
3:15
3:30
stopped after round 3 due to dizzy spell (it was 42 deg C - lovely... mind you, nothing makes you go faster than a hot surface)

28/1/09
5 rounds for time
20kg barbell overhead lunge (25 steps)
21 burpees
18:15

28/1/09
5 rounds for time
20 5kg ball slams
15 25kg dumbbell swing
10 15kg overhead squats
10:15.

Glad to see you've dragged yourself away from the dating thread and have started a log! Awesome improvements since you started. From 0kg to 140kg DL? Nice!

Carter,

Had to stop by and check out your log! Fantastic work you've done in short order! I too started CF in Sept. of '08 and cannot believe how I've progressed. I would not believe it possible, had I not done it!

I do have to agree with you though about workouts at 42 deg C........I'd get a little dizzy too! We used to live in Redding, CA. Temps there average between about 39 deg C or so to about 46 deg. C (115 F?) for about six to eight weeks during our summer......so workouts in the air-conditioned globo were nice......I'd take runs in the early evening where the temps dropped down to a reasonable level.....or better yet, I'd go down to the river trail by the Sacramento River and run......

Congrats on the upcoming gymnastics cert! How awesome. I'm going to a Level-1 at the end of February. Can't wait. My oly lifts "suck," to put it mildly, so I'm really looking forward to getting my form down or at least, getting an idea where it needs to be.

Take care and keep up the great work!

thanks steve!!! yeah.. the heat definitely gets oppressive here in Perth.

i'll love to go to a level 1 cert one day!! i'm grounded (no fly zone) by the doctor until I get medical clearance.... (easter sometime)....

i'm practicing my oly lifts at home with a broomstick.... real hard work!!!! just doing the burgener warmup is intense!!

rest day today....

woke up pretty stiff through the shoulders and upper back.... pullups for a big guy really suck....

went through a warmup routine in the morning to loosen up and did some foam rolling...

did some l-sits and some stretching (glutes and hamstrings)

looking forward to tomorrows WOD in the heatwave.... wooh!! gotta love an aussie summer...

Re: Carter's Aussie Experiment - it hurts so much...

had my weekly 1-on-1 with my coach today...

warmup - 500m row (1:45) - concentrated on the drive...
shoulder dislocates, OHS with dowel, squats..

skill work - squat cleans.... corrected some technique.... poor timing of shoulder shrug (came before hips completed drive - patience patience)... catches were good.... not aggressive enough with elbows and the drive out of the hole... did them with just the barbell.

WOD - for time
60kg barbell
10 x benchpress, 10 x squat cleans
12 x benchpress, 8 x squat cleans
14 x benchpress, 6 x squat cleans
16 x benchpress, 4 x squat cleans
18 x benchpress, 2 x squat cleans
20 x benchpress.
got it in around 20 minutes (didn't really time it) - focus was on coaching and form correction...will try this WOD again for time....
started to string together squat cleans.....

finished the session with dips... max reps.... got 2 & 4 then called it a day....

did the squat cleans without shoes.... HUGE difference! didn't realise how much spring there was in a set of runners... will be doing all future lifting shoeless!!! will look into vibrams (they are allowed in the gym... heck the gym supports them!!)

got my rings today!! woohoo!!! going to mount them later this week and give them a go!!!

Re: Carter's Aussie Experiment - it hurts so much...

went into my local gym prepared to do kelly.

kelly was impossible with all the gerbil trainers being occupied.

luckily, i have learnt to prepare another WOD...courtesy of cellfitness, a local affiliate..

For time
21reps 100kg deadlift
5 reps 45kg press-push press-push jerk
15 reps 100kg deadlift
4 reps 45kg press-push press-push jerk
9 reps 100kg deadlift
3 reps 45kg press-push press-push jerk
did it in 8:38...

first set of deadlifts were broken into 14 + 7.... callous on my right hand were ripping.... stopped and ripped the rest off.
rest of WOD unbroken...

i hurt now.... i'm thinking of a relaxing 5km run for time tomorrow....

everything hurts now....
