15 grams a day of fish oil

Has anyone tried taking in 15g of total EPA/DHA daily? I have had a nagging wrist for a few years now and want see if high dose fish oil will help. Additionally, I am interested in how it will affect my performance and recovery. Currently, I am taking 5-7 grams of EPA/DHA a day. Any advice or feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Just be aware that you might die of blood loss if you cut yourself shaving...I'm at about 5g a day now and it's hard enough to get my blood to clot. Going to 15g should help your recovery some and the reduced inflammation may help with the wrist injury, but I think Robb Wolf only recommends that high of an intake for severe obesity, pre-diabetes, and pretty severe cases of metabolic syndrome.

Re: 15 grams a day of fish oil

If bleeding is a concern, I would monitor my vitamin K intake.

Dr. Sears prescribes this high dose (for various types of cases) with the caveat that they use the highly purified stuff. I suspect the OP is aware of this.

I've been taking ~10 grams for the past three weeks, up from 5 grams. I haven't seen any problems or apparent side effects. My knee was the motivation. It seems to be better, but there hasn't been a lot of Rx'd running in the wods of late, which for me would be the test.

Let us know how the experiment goes.

I've been taking 15g of fish oil a day for about 3 weeks now. I'm 6'0 210 about 25%bf. I haven't seen any side effects. I know Dr. Sears said 15g for severely obese patients but I figured why not give it a try for a while and then bump down to 10g.

I would highly recommend it to be honest. You can always cut the dose down after a month or so.

I personally would use a mix of carlsons cod liver oil and their finest fish oil(both liquid). That way, you get a high amount of D and fish oil which both aid in healing!!!

Aaron, have you done this personally? I take the liquid (roughly 4.5g/day at the moment) and noticed that the liquid has quite a few more calories than just downing the pills. 15g of Omega3's would be like 500calories of fat. Whew!

Re: 15 grams a day of fish oil

Is it 15g of fish oil or 15g of omega-3? Because depending on the quality of the supplement there is a dramatic difference. 15g of cod liver oil could be only 3g omega-3 while 15g of purified oil would be 10g of omega-3.

These are the best I've found so far:

Re: 15 grams a day of fish oil

I am planning on using Vitamin Shoppe brand molecularly distilled fish oil with 500mg total EPA/DHA per 1000mg softgel, so I'll be taking 30 of them a day to get the 15g. As of right now, at 5-7g total EPA/DHA, I have not had any trouble with blood clotting. I hope to start tomorrow, and I will keep the thread going with updates. Any advice on how to spread out the 30 softgels? I usually take 6 in the morning and 6-8 at night. Should I take them 10 at a time with meals, or spread it out more to 5 softgels 6 times a day?

Re: 15 grams a day of fish oil

I've personally been running upwards of 20-30g of Fish Oil a day...I haven't had any problem's with my blood thinning or anything of the sort, I've been using the dose in conjunction with heavy lifting, and I do notice a great increase in recovery time, and my gains are coming along nicely.

I'm running something similar to Paleo, although I can't get all my calories on pure Paleo, so I end up with some processed foods.

Remember to take 400 UI of Vitamin E with each 10g of Fish Oil; it will help counteract the oxidizing effects of the high doses. (Not to mention that additional V-E (not to much) will usually benefit an athlete's performance)

I generally do 10g with 3 of my 6 meals a day, right now I replace the fats I'd normally have with the fish oil...but if strength and mass is a goal, I wouldn't even worry about it.

Re: 15 grams a day of fish oil

Wow, that is a heck of a deal. Have you tried them at all? I've been using the Costco brand which is 684 mg per capsule. I could cut back on the number I'm taking per day with the Puritan brand.
