SLAP tear recovery without surgery?

So, since I'm getting more and more depressed reading all of the SLAP tear threads, I'm wondering if anyone here has successfully rehabbed a diagnosed SLAP lesion without surgery. I guess you'd have to tell me how you define "successfully."

My MRI showed a suspected SLAP tear, since they did NOT do the MRI with contrast. I have an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon on Monday afternoon. I suspect the next step is going to be to have another MRI, this time with contrast.

In researching SLAP lesions, it seems that since they don't repair well on their own, I would have a less than desirable outcome if I opted not to have surgery...especially if I plan to continue doing gymnastics and throwing a barbell over my head.

As much as I don't want surgery, I definitely don't want to things up for good. I was aiming for the Games 2011. If I have wait until 2012, I'd be okay with that.

Thanks, Todd.

I'm trying to be positive and life-could-be-a-lot-worse and all. I've already rehabbed a freaking hamstring tear. I'm finally feeling like I'm kicking @ss, and I have very clear performance goals set...and now this. At least I got through Regionals. The injury actually happened 4 days before Regionals, hahaha. I still PR'd my C&J and 500m row and hit my MUs there, so at least I went out with a bang.

Yeah, unfortunately SLAP lesions don't do well without surgery...

The fact that you exercise and are fit will probably cut off 1-3 months off your recovery time depending on how well you keep up what you can do afterwards though.

Usually it's 8-12 months but may be as low or lower than 6 before you can start doing a lot fo shoulder work again. We'll see hopefully it's not a tear when they do th constrast and just maybe some bad impingement.

Re: SLAP tear recovery without surgery?

If a regular MRI suggests the tear and you have a physical exam that backs up those findings, I wouldn't be surprised if the surgeon decides to forego another MRI and recommends proceeding with repair. Oftentimes, even with contrast, labral findings are difficult to diagnose on MRI. Unfortunately it's not a perfect test......yet.
