Exclamation Why we all should be doing direct neck work

Our necks support our most vital organ, but few people ever do direct neck work. Big wave surfers do heavy direct neck work to help them remain conscious after a wipe out. MMA fighters and football players do neck work as a matter of survival. Female athletes tend to have more severe head injuries, this is most likely do in part to weaker neck muscles.

In the 90s I started doing neck bridges for judo. I'm convinced that having a strong neck saved me from severe injury when I was involved in a high speed car wreck that totaled my Accord in 1997. In 2000 I got into whitewater kayaking, some of the impacts I took in class IV water were massive, on at least 2 occasions I believe my neck strength helped to keep me conscious after I'd flipped under water. Today I continue to work my neck with bridges 2-3x/week, it takes 15 minutes total per week. All links are work and family safe:

Re: Why we all should be doing direct neck work

I totally agree that neck work is important. Any other sites you like that show good neck exercises? I've been wrapping a plate in a towel and then by lying on a bench with the plate on my head working the 4 basic planes, but I feel that I'll be limited to how much weight I can acutally use in this fashion.

I'd say one weaknesses of Crossfit is a lack of planned prehab work such as neck work, rotator work and as you mention neck work.

Both my dad and I have been in car wrecks and were told if it wasn't for the musculature of our necks, we would have had some more neck injury.

Head bridges in judo. I still warm my bridges up with head bridging besides headstand presses or holds. Need to get around to that 30m hold one day.

Amen. I took some nasty falls downhill mountain biking this summer and I am convinced that my rolling practice from martial arts plus the muscle mass in my neck from doing 5/3/1 saved my butt. I did buy a Leatt neck brace after that. Thanks for the reminder.

As far as I'm concerned the bridge is the ultimate neck exercise, it requires nothing but your body and can be done anywhere. Just START SLOW. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ABXH_UP06M Work & family safe!

I think those of us in the Crossfit community would benefit from having strong necks for injury prevention. Think about the stuff we do- handstand pushups, pushing heavy stuff overhead, gymnastic movements, etc.
