Old tires instead of bumper plates?

I have a squat stand and around 300 lbs of iron weights for my Olympic bar. This is plenty of weight for me to train at home. Being short on cabbage $$$, do you all suggest old car tires as something I can drop my iron weights on as I max rep? (similar to dropping the bumpers)

Are there other recommended thick mats that people with older iron weights use?

I have a basement home gym with carpet and drywall all around me so I don't want to start tossing iron around.

Thanks!

Re: Old tires instead of bumper plates?

are you suggesting laying tires flat and dropping a bar loaded with iron weights trying to hit the tires laying on the ground?

or

are you talking about putting tires and wheels (with a 2" reducer in the center) on an olympic bar and then adding smaller diameter iron weight to that to get the poundage you want so when dropped only the tires would touch the ground?

first one seems like it would be hard to control wherer the weight lands or what it does after it lands...the second is done all the time in strongman competitions...
