Re: UFC 141-Ubereem wins his Octagon debut
In the case of the Diaz brothers, they use their range well and have the cardio to throw a high volume of punches that wear their opponent down. They also have a chin and a solid ground game so if you choose to stand up with them, you'll probably lose that fight like Cerrone did. He fought Nate's fight not his own. As good as the Diaz brothers are, they usually will lose a decision to a fighter with strong wrestling and decent standup to set up the takedown.
MMA is still mostly a wrestler's game and the scoring is proof of it because takedowns are worth so much in terms of winning a round. Not to say that anyone that doesn't train mostly in wrestling can't win as we have champions who aren't wrestlers like Silva and Aldo but the rest of the champions are predominantly fighters who have a strong wrestling game. |

Re: UFC 141-Ubereem wins his Octagon debut
Danim: for sure. It's been said before and is worth repeating that wrestling in particular gives such an incredible base and drive to win it always sows great seeds for future success. BJJ is amazing but I think it is easier to learn to avoid losing to BJJ than it is to win via BJJ.
There's always examples to argue otherwise, both old and new. But hey, this isn't the Sherdog forums. ;-) |
