Crossfit after a Microdiscectomy??

Hey guys,

I buldged a disk at L4 L5 approx 4 months ago. I've been through the entire process of treatments, chiro, physio, cortisone epidurals etc.... nothing has worked. I have really painful sciatica on my right side.... sometimes it randomly switches to the left.

Anyhow I'm seeing a specialist in a few weeks with the prognosis looking to be a Microdiscectomy.

Can anyone shed some light on Crossfit after this surgery, personal experiences, is oly lifting a possibility, recovery time etc etc.

Just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for. I'm 39 years old with a good level of fitness so hoping I can bounce back.

Appreciate any input.... cheers guys.

Re: Crossfit after a Microdiscectomy??

I would be happy to answer any questions you have about the Microdiscectomy and how it has affected my Crossfitting. Please email me at Rchapma@gmail.com for more info. The bottom line is I walked a mile the day after surgery and 3 days later I walked 3 miles.
I took a few months off and then just slowly eased back into it. 8 months after the surgery I PR'd my back squat and deadlift.
I followed the advice of the doctors and once they cleared me I just went to basic meathead type lifting for a few months to ease back into things. It has been 14 months since my surgery and I still have some minor issues but nothing like the sciatic pain that consumed my life prior to the surgery.
Email me your number and is be happy to set up a time to chat over the phone about all the details. I'm 43 years old and have been active my entire life but only started crossfitting a few years ago. Let me know how I can help. I'll be happy to share my experience with things. Good luck.

Re: Crossfit after a Microdiscectomy??

I had a microdiscectomy in 2005.

My max squat is 325, max deadlift is 405, and max bench is like 245.

So suffice to say, yeah, you can get back at it as long as it's not TERRIBLE, and you give it the time to heal that it needs.

Hey Gravel,

Just checking in to see if you had the surgery. I'm in the EXACT same situation. I'm seeing a surgeon in an hour to talk about surgery.

Roy and Matt - thanks so much for sharing your story, it's very encouraging.

Gravel...please let me know.

Thanks guys!

Re: Crossfit after a Microdiscectomy??

I had a discectomy on June 13, 2013 on both my L4 and L5. I had put up with the herniations for over a year before finally getting an MRI and having the surgery. I also had moderate nerve damage that left me with no achilles reflex in my right heel. I regained my achilles reflex but I do have a tiny bit of numbness in my foot.

I could provide a wall of text, and I can share more with a PM. Long story, it was a long recovery process for me with ups and downs the entire way. No setbacks, but my back would be very unhappy many days. I have since made big PRs on all my lifts.

If you want more details just PM and I will share as much as I can. I know the anxiety and frustration. There were many days I didn't think I'd feel normal enough to lift again, but it will come - it just takes time. More than you probably want to acknowledge.

Re: Crossfit after a Microdiscectomy??

Hi Gravel ~ I had a L5/S1 Microdiscectomy on 7/22/12.

Like you, I had the same concerns going into the procedure. My disc was completely ruptured to I didn't have any other options. This procedure is a much different than a general Ortho. procedure. Recovery times can vary albeit I will speak a little to my recovery.

I followed PT and walked over a mile 2 weeks after the procedure and followed the advice of my PT and didn't vary. Little to your body as you will have better body awareness than anyone. Don't push it as you may be a little sore when you first start moving. I completed a half marathon 5 months after the procedure and didn't start Oly. Lifting until 9 months removed from the procedure. I started very light and made sure the movements were dialed in as perfectly as they would be. I didn't start lifting heavy until around 14-15 months removed from surgery.

To this day, the only thing I am lacking is mobility in the lower spine. My strength and balance is back and I am extremely careful w/ heavy pulls.

I am happy to share any details you would like. I wish you a speedy recovery! I know it can be frustrating but you are certainly not alone.
